The three things nobody tells you
- Size labels are ceilings, not targets. "3 months" means up to 3 months. An average baby moves into 3-month clothes around 6โ8 weeks. When in doubt, size up.
- Brands disagree wildly. One brand's 0โ3M is another's newborn. Weight ranges on the label beat the age on the label, every time.
- An 8 lb+ baby may skip newborn size entirely โ and roughly a third of babies arrive over 8 lbs or get there within two weeks.
How many you actually need, per size
Assume a blowout or spit-up costume change once or twice a day, laundry every 2โ3 days:
Newborn: 4โ5 bodysuits, 4โ5 footed sleepers, 1 going-home outfit. That's all โ some babies wear this size for two weeks.
0โ3 months: 8โ10 bodysuits, 8โ10 sleepers, 5โ7 pairs of socks, 2 hats, 2โ3 pants.
3โ6 months: same list โ this is often the longest-worn size of year one.
6โ12 months: add 2โ3 "real" outfits for sitting-up photos; keep everything else zipper-front.

Zippers over snaps, always. You will do a 3am diaper change in the dark, half-asleep, on a screaming baby. A zipper is one motion; snaps are a 14-piece puzzle. This single preference will improve your life more than any $200 gadget.
Rules that save money
- Don't fully stock any size beyond 3โ6 months before birth. You can't know if you're raising a 10th-percentile or 95th-percentile human yet โ track it as you go with the growth percentile calculator.
- Wash only one size ahead. Unwashed clothes with tags can be exchanged for the next size; washed ones can't.
- Buy ahead only on deep clearance, only one size up. End-of-season sales for the size your baby hits next season are the one good version of buying ahead.
- Secondhand is functionally new at these sizes โ most items were worn a handful of times before being outgrown.
Registry strategy
People love gifting clothes and will do so regardless of your registry. So: register for clothes in 3โ6M and 6โ12M (the sizes gift-givers skip), and let the newborn cuteness arrive unprompted โ it will. Put the boring essentials on the registry checklist instead; nobody gifts bottle brushes without being asked.
