When to pack
Have the bag done by week 36. Full-term is 39–40 weeks, but roughly one in ten babies arrives before 37 — and packing during early contractions is nobody's best work. Keep it by the door or in the car.
For the birthing parent
- ID, insurance card, and your phone charger — make it a 10-foot cable; outlets are never near the bed.
- Your own toiletries. The hospital's soap is fine; feeling like yourself after delivery is worth the travel bottles.
- Lip balm and hair ties. The two most-borrowed items on any labor ward. Hospital air is desert-dry.
- A long, loose going-home outfit — you'll still look about six months pregnant, and that's completely normal. Soft waistband, dark colors.
- Non-slip socks or slides you don't mind throwing away.
- Snacks you actually like. Post-delivery hunger is legendary and hospital kitchens close.
- Nursing bra if you plan to breastfeed — the sleep-bra style, nothing with underwire.
Skip: your own towels (hospital has them), more than one book (you won't read), the fancy postpartum underwear (the hospital's mesh ones are genuinely good — take extras home), and the full makeup bag. If you want photos, tinted moisturizer and mascara cover it.
For your partner
The most-forgotten section — partners pack for the baby and forget they'll be living in a recliner for two or three days:
- A change of clothes and a hoodie (delivery rooms run cold)
- Their own charger, snacks, and toiletries
- Cash or card for the vending machines and parking
- A pillow from home — hospital sofas are punishment
For the baby
The hospital provides diapers, wipes, swaddles, and hats while you're there. You only need:
- An installed car seat. Not in the trunk — installed, by week 36. Most hospitals won't discharge you without it.
- Two going-home outfits — one newborn size, one 0–3 months, because you don't know the size of the person you're meeting.
- A weather-appropriate layer — blanket for the car ride, nothing bulky under the harness straps.
